Pietersite was only formally identified in 1962 by Sid Pieters, who discovered it in Namibia — making it one of the younger named gemstones in the mineral world, and one of the rarest. Its brecciated structure — formed when existing minerals were fractured by geological forces and re-cemented in new formations — has made it a natural symbol in crystal traditions of transformation through disruption, and the idea that something more complex and beautiful can emerge from a period of upheaval.
